September is Suicide Prevention Month—Here’s How Art Helps

Hi friends,

Grab a brush

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month — a time to remember those we’ve lost, support those who are struggling, and work together to create communities of hope.

Suicide touches so many lives. If you’ve felt that weight personally, you know the silence and the ache it can leave behind. Grief, trauma, and stress can feel overwhelming, especially when words are hard to find.

That’s where ART steps in. Art gives us a way to express what we can’t always say. Through color, shape, and movement, we can release emotions, create space for healing, and find connection with others who understand. Whether it’s painting, collage or even scribbling on paper, the process itself can become a lifeline.

Let your feelings flow
Let your feelings flow

It has been 15 years since our family was touched by suicide — I know healing is possible. I was able to find my light again and I helped my daughters find their way through the darkness too. I did this not by erasing grief, but by transforming it into expression and connection through art. Every brushstroke, every line, every creative act can remind us: You Are Not Alone.

As we honor Suicide Prevention Month, I encourage you to take a few minutes for yourself. Try creating something — big or small…anything, you don’t have to have any art experience just start. And if you know someone who is struggling, invite them to make something with you. Sometimes, that invitation can open a door.

Together, we can break the silence, honor the pain, and create beauty from the broken places.
